Lighten up the Bathroom

Your bathroom is your private haven where you unwind after a long day, pamper yourself or simply freshen up. However, when it comes to lighting, the bathroom is probably the most neglected space.

Most people are content with having adequate lighting and have no idea how the best lighting fixtures can transform an ordinary bathroom into a glamorous space. Moreover, today’s bathrooms can be fitted with multiple modern gadgets to enhance the experience.

When you are spending money on steam showers and fancy vanities, why not light up your bathrooms to highlight them in all their glory!

Lighting Up Your Bathroom

A good lighting scheme for your bathroom requires meticulous planning. There are several lighting options available, each with its own suitability and specific purpose. Some provide essential lighting while others enhance the ambience of your bathroom..

Essential Lighting

The most important area for lighting is the vanity. The lights installed in this area provide adequate illumination to your face and head when you’re grooming, shaving, putting on your makeup and so on.

Never use recessed ceiling lights directly over the vanity mirror. This creates a shadow beneath, which will make it difficult for you to see your face and head clearly.

Sconces mounted on both sides of the mirror or vertical fixtures are best for providing the maximum illumination in all the right places. If you want to fix the lighting over the mirror, place it at least 1900 to 2050 mm above the bathroom floor. The minimum brightness should be 450 lumens and the fixture should be at least 300 mm in size. This way, the light will spread evenly and cover every inch of your face and head.

After the vanity, the shower area is the next important aspect of your bathroom lighting. You want adequate lighting when you bathe so recessed lights are a good option. They diffuse the light evenly across the entire shower cubicle.

Ambient Lighting

These fixtures are secondary lighting options although they add glamour and character to your humble bathroom. With so many lighting options available, you can really be as creative as you want when shopping for ambient lighting fixtures.

Instead of a standard design, try out chandelier lights or pendant lamps. Such exquisite fixtures can totally transform your bathroom, giving it a designer look and feel. Cove lighting is another great option. It adds an even and soft glow to the ceilings and walls and creates a plush look all around.

If your bathroom has decorative items or plants or any feature wall, you might want to add accent lighting. Installed at the right places, these fixtures can highlight the beauty of your artefacts or feature walls making your bathroom look even more beautiful.

Consider Adding Dimmers

Dimmers give you total control over the amount of light in your bathroom. They are perfect when you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. They can also be used as accent lighting to create a muted flow of light throughout the bathroom.
